What does Stephen Mandel's bio say about finance these days?

Came across the bio of Stephen Mandel. Apparently he spent 4 years at Mars & Co. as a consultant before going to business school, working as a consumer/retail analyst at Goldman for 6 years and then joining Tiger Management (becoming an MD after 7 years). He then left to start Pine Capital.

Is it just me or would this not fly in today's world? Would someone with that background get a job at a hedge fund like Tiger? It seems like he was doing ER not IBD at GS. Would they then get funding for a hedge fund?
