What would you ask the head of corporate M&A?

Last night at a cocktail party I met an old family acquaintance who is the head of M&A for a company that's been in the deal news lately. I talked with him a bit, discussing my investment banking goals, what he looks for in a banker, etc. I was curious what others on the board would ask someone like this, for example:
-Is it appropriate to ask about details of a pending deal that's in the news?
-Is it appropriate to ask about their future M&A strategy?
-Is it appropriate to ask about terms, financial details, etc. of past deals?

i'd ask him how the job hunt is going

------

"its the running joke now, we now have fair trade with china so they send us poisoned sea food and we send them fraudulent securities."

------ "its the running joke now, we now have fair trade with china so they send us poisoned sea food and we send them fraudulent securities."

i was kidding about the current M&A drought relative to a year ago, he may well be doing fine.

i wouldn't ask him that though because he, like you, may not "get it"

------

"its the running joke now, we now have fair trade with china so they send us poisoned sea food and we send them fraudulent securities."

------ "its the running joke now, we now have fair trade with china so they send us poisoned sea food and we send them fraudulent securities."

I wouldn't be asking about deal terms, that is not something he is likely to share with anyone outside the deal. A cocktail party isn't a place to be asking to many intrusive questions. Casual talk of industries of interest, congratulations on recent success, etc are appropriate for a cocktail party. I would set up a meeting to get into more in depth discussions.
