When Is The Next Space Race?
It's been a long time since the last space race to be the "first" to the moon, be the "first" satellite in orbit. And be the "first" for everything space related. Have we become complacent and just shitty in general. Why don't countries compete to be the first anymore?
Why can there not be a space race to be the first ones to build a space elevator and a moon base for manufacturing larger rockets? Neil De Grasse Tyson was asking the same questions. Is it just financially unfeasible?
There is a space race going on now between governments and private companies for space tourism, moon bases and attempts at getting closer to Mars.
What even is the point of a moonbase?
Launch point for Mars, mining helium-3 for nuclear fusion, accelerated human expansion, accelerated GMO production for radiation and cold survival...the list goes on. Plenty of good reasons.
I think the next space race will come once the travel to space becomes a necessity and not a luxury. Don't get me wrong, I think SpaceX and Blue Origin are amazing in their pursuits. But to steal Steve Eisman's concept, "People are ill equipped to handle problems that evolve very slowly." Once our population becomes unsustainable in the developed nations, the air quality decreases so drastically, and we really see the impact of global warming and realize fossil fuels will eventually run out; then we will ramp up our space programs. People tend to not be very proactive about stuff, only reactive. Right now the existing space race is proactive.
I think we'll see people colonizing Antarctica in earnest before we colonize the moon. Antarctica has tons of fresh water, a breathable atmosphere, and it is easily accessed compared to any celestial spots.
I'd also expect more underwater colonization.
Both of these are essential next steps before we begin colonization of anywhere else in earnest. If we can't make it work for Joe Immigrant (and not Jane the Scientist) in Antarctica, there's no way we can make it feasible for them in a harsher environment like Mars, with its lack of water, atmosphere, magnetic fields, dissimilar day/night cycle, etc.
IT will begin when we can mine precious materials, but I think the US should terraform Mars and claim it as the 51st state.

The next space race between world powers will come most likely sometime in our lifetimes, when, as a result of rapid reproduction, the Earth becomes inhabitable. The race will be to build a self-sufficient colony in outer space, perhaps a moon base, and I believe it will be a time of new world order, as times of great social disorientation and limited resources tend to invite conflict. I predict this will happen sometime in the 2030s.
The next space race between businesses will likely come even sooner. Private companies are going to be competing with each other to build the first space hotels sometime in the 2020s.
When is the next race war?
Mining asteroids will be the next "race" type deal. The space elevator is a great idea, and the money/interest is certainly there, it's the matter of materials technology, primarily dealing with the tether. It just isn't there yet.
