which to choose
Hey guys, I'm looking for some advice, I have the option between a 1yr MBA and a 2yr MBA, both schools are ranked similarily with similar OCR. I want to work in ibanking, i have some capital markets sales experience and commercial banking analyst exp for a total of 5 years as well as a CFA.
Should i still do a 2yr mba with a summer internship to get ibanking exp or do you think that my banking experience will be enough out of a 1yr program?
I am not super young anymore so i am conscious of time, I hear that it isnt as easy to land associate roles in your mid 30's?
Thanks for your help!
I had the same dilemma and decided that a 2 year would be better, I think the internship experience is a massive help and that's something a 1 year MBA usually doesn't provide.
Which 1 yr programs are you looking at anyway?
I agree, the internship experience could be crucial. Plus, the two year program will allow you to let loose a bit more and develop the lasting bond with your classmates that might come in handy in the future. Remember, bschool is as much about networking as it is about learning, maybe even more.
Regards
im canadian so queens or ivey vs rotman or schulich.
Does anyone know if banks dont look favourably on applicants in their 30's for associate roles? I have spoken with a couple of bankers who have said that they might select a 27 or 28 year old over someone in thier early to mid 30's because they know that they might be more willing to put in the hours.
since the one year programs start in the spring there is like 9-15 month advantage to them over the 2 year program.
Thanks for the feedback guys
While age plays a factor, most people won't use it to entirely dismiss someone, especially when you're talking about a couple years and the fact that you would be finishing up an MBA (which many folks use as a way to change career paths). In my eyes, the one way to truly make age a non issue, you do an internship at the company and show the people there that even though you are a couple years older, that you are just as capable. If you do a good job in the internship, people won't even look at your age...so all signs, in my mind, point back to the 2 year program. Good luck.

One thing about one year MBA's that most don't talk about is the crushing schedule, could be different at other schools but as cph said, Bschool is also about networking and you wont be doing much of that if your stuck in the library.
Let's face it, you won't be learning much there but with a two year program, you at least have a chance to take it easy and make the most of it by making connections and getting work experience relevant to your plans.
And I wouldn't worry about age by the way.
Would definitely go 2 year for the reasons others have said.
What age are we talking about? 30, 31, 32 I wouldn't worry..."mid-thirties" I might start to have some concerns. 35, 36, 37 is starting to get damn old to be a first year FT associate.
This sounds like INSEAD vs CBS ED.
two year
i am thinking about putting b school off for another year and will be 31 when i finish.... i am still not that worried
Yeah I would be 31/32 when i would be wrapping up the program, all this feedback has made my decision even more difficult, I was honestly leaning towards the one year but I will re-examine things.
By the way, how do these I-banks know if you are 30 or mid 30... I mean I'm 20 and people think I'm 24-27..... on skype I could pull off 30. And no i'm not bald, my hair looks like patrick bateman. Do they ask how old you are? isn't that age discrimination.....
or do they just figure you graduate college at 21-22 and then add the years from there?
I'll be 31 when I get out of Bschool as well and I'm not worried, thankfully unlike New Yorker and despite years upon years of cigarettes and alcohol abuse I still look like a baby. Ha.
