Which way to get into IB at Goldman Sachs or JPMorgan?

Hi all,

I have been working as a management consulting analyst at Accenture for almost 1 years. I have a BA, MA in Economics and currently pursuing another MSc degree in Financial Engineering, all degrees from reputable universities with good GPAs.

My aim is to work in IB divisions of Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan. I have been applying to both those IBs and corporate finance divisions of Big 4s. Currently, KPMG corporate finance is in! How possible is it to move from KPMG Corp Fin to IB (GS/JPM)?

Also, I believe that it is easier to get into a top MBA program from Accenture than KPMG. Hence, my B-Plan is to go for a prestigious MBA in two years and then make the shift to IB.

What do you guys think about the plans? Is it easier to go to a top MBA program from Accenture (management consulting) or KPMG (corporate finance)? Is it possible to move from KPMG Corp Fin to IB, specifically GS or JPM?

Best,

Denise, Get an assignment to Financial Ideas Exchange in NY, if its still there. Start networking, the key to getting into Goldman or a ramp to Goldman is top ten % performance at Accenture, then shake the trees. Find out about the culture of each. For JP Morgan, I don't have direct experience. But, GS may have an Accenture gig - its not your degrees, its "what have you done". Find a mentor in the financial division at Accenture. Then go from there, and be sure not to use real name on Oasis.

Definitely easier coming from top MBA program due to organized recruiting process. Your background in consulting / corp fin will also be a plus.

That said, nothing is impossible if you network from either Accenture or KPMG but I would consider that less likely than top MBA.

Also, question -- why specifically GS/JPM? Most prestige people want GS/MS -- curious.
