Who is still hiring?
Hey guys, I am pretty frustrated, my school year is about to go to an end and I have yet to secure a summer internship. I have had multiple superdays and interviews at top firms, but no offers yet. I go to a target school and sophomore recruitment has already started and I am freaking out.
I am also struggling with HR not answering their freaking emails when I am interested about a firm or position or people saying they will follow up and won't.
Who is still hiring?
SOS
summer internship for what? IB, ER, S&T?
for IB.
Deep breaths. You're at a target school and you're a girl. Have you been networking? Have you asked any of your close contacts at wherever you superday'd for additional contacts at places that may be open for an intern? Could be a big bank, could be a small boutique. Doesn't matter too much as long as you get good experience. Keep your chin up. And if you are hot, please DM me your instagram.
What BreakingRich said.. also interested in the IG
I have been networking a shit ton. Just kind of clueless how to ask for a job.. haha. People just don't email back. I superdayed at Citi, RBC, Evercore and Mizuho. How do I ask the people? lol... with regards to your comment on my attractiveness, ive unfortunately had alumni's ask me out to dinner when I have reached out.
Maybe they're trying to help!
It's simple. Flat out ask.
Option 1 (Setting up networking talks): "Hello, my name is IBlovergirl and I am a junior at H/Y/P looking for a job in IB / S&T/ ER / DCM / ECM / IR etc., and I would greatly appreciate if you had 15 minutes to talk about what you do and how I can prepare for the role. Are you free this coming Wednesday to talk?"
Option 2 (More along your current situation, and "desperate" to find something): "Hello BreakingRich, I hope you have been well. As you are aware I had my superday at your bank, but unfortunately I was not chosen for a summer analyst position. I am determined to find an internship for this summer, and was wondering if you could connect me with anyone who may be looking for an intern. Please let me know"
In regards to your looks.... "unfortunately" are you kidding me? Use every advantage you have. Welcome to the real world sweetheart. Sometimes a person gets a job just because they are better looking than others (I know a few girls who interviewed at the same BB Superday, seemed pretty interesting that the hot one wasn't asked a single technical but the "ugly" one was GRILLED on technicals... and they had very similar resumes coming from a non-target). You should be accepting that chance to go for dinner, if you didn't I am not surprised you struggled to get your offer. No offense, but that is a golden opportunity being thrown at you, and you're dumb to ignore it just because you think they want to fuck you. Maybe they also want to work with you.
.
Please try calling them as well, not just email.
It depends on what you're looking for. I got my summer internship at a F1000 company (in the 700's on the list) and didn't officially get the job til mid-late April. Whatever industry you're looking at, you need to start looking to smaller companies/banks NOW. Follow up every week if they initially respond and then don't get back to you. You're definitely too late for F100 companies and BB banks, but targeting F1000 companies and small regional banks is still very possible. Stay positive, stay focused, send hundreds of emails and resumes and hope for the best.
EDIT: I just realized you're a sophomore. Don't freak out- not having a sophomore year internship isn't the end of the world. In fact, from what I understand, most IB hires only have a junior year internship. Anything you do this summer that is finance related already puts you ahead of most candidates. Expand your search to include companies. Getting a CF internship will be worlds better than a regular college summer job.
I am not a sophomore, I am a junior graduating this December, so early. I worked at a top private equity firm's fund last summer.
Here is your problem. Stop talking to HR. They only block people; they don't move people forward.
At this point in the cycle, boutiques are your best bet. Call the MDs directly if possible. Guess their email if not.
Use google to find alumni. Google "Managing Director" "[Insert School Name]" "Investment Bank" and you'll get tons of bios for managing directors from your school. Guessing email formats isn't that hard and 9/10 alumni respond.
Also think outside the box. Equity Research is a great platform to learn modeling skills on. Reach out to those guys too, offering support for any additional research they might be interested in pursuing but can't due to time.
Thank you, that is the best advice that I have gotten. what if I cannot find any MD from my school. I am literally trying every firm. Also, last MD That I talked to didn't help me with anything. He was an MD at UBS
The MD's don't need to be from your school. You'll just have a lower hit rate with them.
Most MD's don't help with anything simply because they aren't in a position to take on an intern. It's a numbers game. Reach out to as many as you can.
Always ask if they have any recommendations on other alumni / people with whom you should talk. This keeps the ball rolling and helps you network since you'll run out of contacts through Google quickly.
Be sure to leave a good impression even if it goes nowhere. You'll likely reach out to these people next year. This means thanking them for their time. Heck, maybe go over the top with a personal thank you card. Can't hurt.
If it looks like the answer is moving toward a "no" during any conversation with them (which should happen every time except for the one where you actually get an internship), pivot the conversation toward "keeping dialogue open". Check in with them every once in a while to see if they could use some extra manpower to take care of small things. Sometimes the answer is going to be "no" one day, then the MD gets slammed with tons of work he needs done and could suddenly use an intern. Or an analyst quits unexpectedly and an intern could be a good stop gap solution.
