LVMH
Fortune says who is forth?
LVMH isn't 1st by a long shot in terms of premium spirits... However, they do have Moet, which is a major name in the wine game.
Realistically, you're looking at Diageo, Pernod-Ricard, Bacardi, Brown-Forman, Fortune Brands, and then LMVH to round out the top six in terms of the largest premium spirits distribution companies in the world. Diageo is hands down, the largest premium spirits company in the world. Their collection of spirits is a veritable whos who of major names in alcohol. Pernod-Ricard has the same thing to their name. Bacardi, besides their strangehold in brand name rum, owns a few major spirits in other areas like Grey Goose, Bombay Sapphire and Dewers. Brown-Forman is best known for Jack Daniels, Woodford Reserve, SoCo, and both Herruda and el Jimador tequilas. Fortune Brands is another major player in the Whiskey game, owning Jim Beam, Makers Mark and a number of well known brands across all major spirits labels. Finally, we get to LMVH, who is best known for the Hennessy brand, Belvedire Vodka and a number of Champaignes including Dom Perignion, Moet and Krug. The rest... well... they aren't as important.
As to wine, that I can't help you with as much as spirits...
Well somebody knows their shit.
By Fortune, I meant Fortune Brands. Thanks for the info Frieds.
Are we really gonna call SoCo a "premium" brand? Just sayin', Frieds. And I'm from New Orleans.
Happy Mardi Gras!
By the way, Herradura and El Jimador are both the shit. Unbelievably subtle and smooth, they both make Patron taste like Cuervo. Little known fact: Herradura was started by Bing Crosby, hence the horseshoe on the label (herradura is Spanish for "horseshoe"). It's a well-known fact that when Bing wasn't beating his wife and kids, he was at the track.
The only tequila I like more than those two is Don Julio. But that's in a whole other world.
Eddie,
There are a ton of brands I wouldn't consider to be Premium, like Jose Cuervo or Patron, but then again, it's not my call. That's for the marketing department. While I have to personally agree with you on SoCo, it's considered a "Premium Spirit" for some reason or another. And yeah, I gotta second the comments on Herradura and El Jimador. Both are absolutely phenominal and are some of the few tequilas I keep around for drinking. I hate tequila, but even I will make exceptions for quality.
That and I didn't know that Herradura was Bing Crosby's brand of Tequila. Plus, it's a better story than Cabo Wabo and Sammy Hagar.
Bizarrely enough, was just reading the following article 30 mins ago...
