Will Big Tech companies be broken apart?

Title says it all. Will this happen in the next decade or so? I know these things are hard to predict, but why not speculate

I’m asking because I’m an incoming college student and since recruiting starts so early, I’m already thinking about which career to aim for. I’m stuck between tech and IB. Is it worth trying to get a tech job if the industry might not have good long term prospects?

It honestly depends on way too many variables to predict, including variables we aren't even aware of yet. If I had to bet, I would bet on the side of government crackdown, but who knows? And on that note, who knows if a crackdown won't inspire innovation in the sector and lead to more competitor companies, and thus more jobs?

You should pick a career based on things you can actually control, like your interests, your talents, your network, etc., not whether or not a black swan even will occur.

Crackdown won't lead to innovation lmao. Legislation is being pushed by septuagenarians who've never done more on a computer than type up an email; people like Warren don't know what the hell they're talking about.

lol there is a world outside of big tech similar to how there is a world outside bulge bracket banks. tesla and other car manufacturers need swe, medtech needs software engineers, fin tech firms need swes, delivery service apps need swes, walmart and other retailers need swes and tech as an industry has way better long term prospects

I think CRE hit the nail on the head above- there will be a continuous need for bankers and software engineers for the foreseeable future, so whichever is more interesting and you’re better at go for.

On the more broad question: I can’t really see how things will get broken up. Google definitely has damn near a monopoly but how will you break it apart? It has many departments so you can spin off the self driving car platform and maybe Google home products off and retain the main Google search functionality. But how do you split up internet searches? Google is so foundational to the internet.. yeah sure someone out there uses Bing or whatever, but Google is the go to for most people.

Facebook I think will die over the next decade. Apple’s power is their “ecosystem” of products, with the main hit being the iPhone. Amazon definitely can be broken up, but I’d imagine Jeff could burn through more lobbyist than anyone has ever seen so I doubt anything will happen. Yeah, sure the Congresspeople and Senators will talk all they want but when they get big “donations” and a new house in the Keys they’ll find another issue to talk about and turn a blind eye to whatever Amazon does. Maybe I’m cynical about politics but that’s how I see it

Edit: Also most of Amazon’s profit margins comes from AWS, which has a majority market share through first mover advantage. And they could argue GCP, Azure, and IBM Cloud are competition.

The tech industry probably has the best long term prospects, but it depends on your interests and passion. You'll have to work long hours improving your skills in both industries (tech and finance), which are both very competitive.

Tech competition is global and being great at programming is table stakes. Learn real computer science if you want to make it far - this will involve learning a lot of math.

Exactly right, therefore my recommendation that a new student DEVELOP these skills in order to stand apart. If you're a computer scientist and understand data and algorithms, rather than a "programmer," you'll be better off for sure.

No, because they're of major importance for the democratic west in the fight against the CCP. That is, if some batshit crazy Bernie Sanders wannabe doesn't make it to the White House. Not so long ago this would have been a reasonablye assumption, but you never know given the current peanut-brain in the oval office.
