Will My Friend Get Caught?
I recently stumbled over my friend's resume. Hes applying to S&T/IBD programs at BBs for summer internship. I know for a fact that there were a few blatant lies and some wild exaggerations on his resume.
For instance,
Last summer he was going to intern at a local PWM Merrill Lynch Office. He had an offer and everything but last minute he decided he did not want to do grunt work for free (it was unpaid). However, on his resume he blatantly states he interned there for 1 month.
He also added 100 points to his SAT score. I went to the same HS as him so I know his real score.
I can't help but think that even if he gets hired, a background check would surely find these things out correct?
Stay classy Duke students, stay classy...
Anyways, yeah your friend will definitely get caught and will lose his offer. The background screening is very thorough - they go through W4 and 1009 forms or whatever with the IRS, and call and talk to specific people that you list. Its actually kind of invasive - when I go was going through m background check, my senior from a previous internship called me and asked me how come I decided to turn down an offer to his firm and decided to work for a rival instead...
But yeah he's going to get caught.
Also Duke runs Wall Street, maybe a little less than Wharton and Harvard though. Cornell sucks haha
The Big Red really just gets absolutely no respect on this site haha. I feel even worse because that was my dream school in HS, and I got wait listed!

..
Caught you, you little lying shitfuck...
P.S.: nice edit.
Here is original topic in case he edits it.
i don't know about the sat score but if he doesn't have someone at ML to back him up, i think he will definietly get caught for that
yes, you will get caught
To answer the question directly, yes. The especially the faked ML internship. But what resume are you referring to? & Puss what are you going on about?

ML, he should definitely get caught and only an idiot lies about working somewhere where he/she never worked as an intern - especially considering this is probably pretty recent considering this person is probably a soph or junior. That's just funny and absurd.
Regarding the SAT score - could get caught, could not - depends how much the bank/employer cares about that stuff and how thoroughly the background check is performed. It doesn't have to be very thorough to pick out these lies, but I'm sure some people get away with much worse and far more exaggerated.

ML Internship is a really stupid idea. One month is meaningless, anyway.
SAT score... I'm not sure if they verify that or if they can... but probably not the smartest idea either.
It gets a lot dicier after college. Noone lies about where they worked but plenty of people embellish what they did while at work (especially if they get stuck in the back office).
Who does he think he is Frank Abagnale?

yo piss in da boots, why are you calling people lying shitfucks when all your other threads are filled with lies.
and most companies do background checks with emolyers but i have never heard of anyone checking your SAT scores. they cant even do that without your permission as im pretty sure collegeboard is not even allowed to release such personal information without your consent.
This guy has two different nicknames on this forum: student420 and messianic.
After I read the post, I was 80% sure he was talking about himself, so I decided to make a witty joke and posted "Stay classy Duke students, stay classy..." (student420 mention he is in Duke in one of his previous posts).
By accident, he posted "my friend actually goes to Cornell" from his different account. As soon as he saw it, he edited the post, but unfortunately for him, I saw his original reply.
Just look at the messianic's previous posts. He decided to use his old account to cover his reputation on WSO. Fuck, I'd do the same thing.
jackdaniels, I definitely posted wrong info before (I have no life, I am on WSO 24/7), but I've never lied intentionally.
not that I empathize with Puss - but from what I've seen earlier - this guy, if he really does have 2 names - has even posted that he's from Duke under the messianic name.
I'm not going to rip on you on a public forum - not very classy, and no point - but messianic/student420, you've been pretty unclassy yourself - I've helped you on a couple of points and you've ignored other questions I've asked you. One, it's so incredibly declasse, and two, people will stop helping you if you keep acting like such a tool. Half of your posts are something that is common knowledge, and don't need to be asked/answered, by anyone who's done a reasonable amount of background research on finance in general, or has any modicum of common sense.
I hope for your sake that you don't come off as such a douchebag in person, because whatever your school/exaggerated work exp./GPA/inflated SATs, I sure as hell wouldn't give you an interview/offer.
Why are you so salty ?
While we are on this topic - I interned at a boutique research firm for 3 months during the year but only worked with one analyst. Apparently that analyst no longer works there so there is nobody to vouch for me as a reference. It was also unpaid so there is no record of me with HR or payroll or anything. Will a background check assume that I lied about this position?
bump the above.
ha, good catch puss
the way bobby123 is stealing this thread i would think he is banker88 or something.
I added 400 points to my SATs and gave myself a 2640(1850) and the guys I interned with seemed pretty impressed.
A) who cares
B) the term "shitfuck" clearly is under used
Quoted for absolute truth.
lol, I actually have nothing against Cornell. A lot of people jokingly call it a "farming" school because it has a state-funded agri department, and some other non-elitist aspects to it like hotel management. Cornell people do well, but they don't have the same flashyness of Harvard/Penn/Duke/Princeton people.
