Would you invest in religion?

Okay so this is definitely one of the more...interesting… things I’ve seen in a while. Has anyone actually heard of religious ETFs or seen anyone invest in them?

How well do you think these funds will even perform? From the article, these funds are centered around putting investments in establishments with supposed biblical values. ...And that’s about it.

The article focuses on two funds in particular, Inspire’s Global Hope Large Cap ETF (BLES) and its Small/Mid Cap Impact ETF (ISMD) with an accumulated $60 million in assets. Both were launched in 2017. So far, over the same time frame, their performance is as follows, 1. BLES had a 5.2% return 2. ISMD lost 2.3% For comparison, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF had a 1.8% gain and the iShares Russell 2000 ETF had a 0.6% loss. Granted, it is far too early to decide whether these funds will even do well, but I am curious to some of your thoughts.

What kind of strategies will actually allow these funds to do well? There doesn’t seem to be a particularly defined strategy driving the funds. Would these funds only do well by pure chance?

Investing in (vaguely defined) values just seem like a terrible idea to me but apparently others didn’t think so. How would they even find companies that “match” their values? I’ve always felt like some firms’ corporate values are partially for PR while also being partially genuine. I would think it’s difficult for someone to find firms that align with the funds’ game plan and hope that the firms they find will also be good performers.

What are your thoughts? Would investing in “values” (religious or otherwise) ever be a good idea?

It just seems like these funds are narrowing their investment possibilities over really vague guidelines to be honest.

It's a loser. The only way to make a 7-figure income in religion is to be in the Vatican inner-circle or a televangelist. Corruption or Charisma.
