One of my best opportunities might be in Memphis. If it came down to choosing the best career option, would you live in Memphis? Or choose a lesser career choice elsewhere?
It would be nice being able to live like a king on an analyst salary. I wouldn't mind living in a studio in NYC, but I also wouldn't mind a super nice 1 BR with a pool, gym, etc... Don't get me wrong, I'd rather pay a premium to live in the actual big city, but I'm trying to look at the pros of Memphis... Is the crime really that bad?
I only was in Memphis a few days, but I don't think I would ever want to live there. I never felt like in danger walking around, but it was pretty bad. It was crazy how one block is really nice, the other is run down to hell, everything is kind of mixed in together. Like the nice Peabody hotel was 2 blocks from a divey motel. I have a few buddies in Nashville, say its cheap to live, probably some better locations to live, not sure about finance opportunities, but one of the guys seems to have leads in the industry for new jobs.
If you find a decent spot to live in Memphis that isn't mixed in with the run down areas surrounding it, I don't think it would be worst thing in the world, I am sure your salary would go far, and can demolish a boatload of BBQ on your lunch break so has its perks.
I do love BBQ so that might settle things...
Rendezvous in downtown was awesome. Beale street was pretty cool, totally a divey like Nashville equivalent. I like open container laws where you can drink generally wherever, so that's a plus, but it is kind of run down. Cheap beers though! I am speaking more from a tourist perspective now though, some BBQ sounds good right now!
Memphis is a great city, but does not have a great downtown environment. Crime isn't that bad the further east you go such as midtown/Cooper Young areas. Memphis also has great suburbs. Basketball is king in the city from an entertainment standpoint and there isn't much else other than minor league baseball and soccer teams.
