I'm interested in full time recruitment for equity research from Big 4. Not to many of my university's alumni are in ER, so I am planning on going through the equity research reports I can currently access reports from: CS, JPM, Argus, GS, KBW, and MS. I am planning on cold emailing the associates listed on the reports with a sentences and one question targeted to their coverage.
Basically I am working if this is a good way of reaching to people in the ER space, and what a typical hit rate might look like.
For example, I might send a KWB associate covering banks, "How do you factor in rate hike expectations when calculating NII?" Is this too specific of a question to ask? I am thinking that asking these type of questions which show interest and hopefully led to a higher hit rate.
Why don’t you ask about their life instead?
I'll send some people an email with the subject line "FOUND YOUR WSO AND PHUB ACCOUNTS". Will update you on how high my hit rate is.
- But in case you were serious, I will also ask about their day to day and general experience when asking to set up a call.
Asking the question casually when you actually get them on the phone would be better. Why would they take the time to answer a random persons question? They will be more inclined to answer if after they've gotten to know you over the phone and sussed you out.
Capture their interest in you initial cold email with your background and interest in ER.
Something like this: greetings, your background, why interested in ER, and end with "I'd love to chat on the phone this week or next - let me know what times are best for you"
Okay, that makes perfect sense. I was worried that starting with a targeted question might be off-putting. I will definitely update my template. Thanks
Good luck! Some good questions to ask are how their Sr Analyst runs the group. Depending on the sector and analyst, teams could vary greatly from one another. For ex, updating an earnings model could take over an hour in one group, vs 20 mins in another group. Or the amount of maintenance research published, how coverage is split or not split between associates etc.
