Yet another big company hacked - Are we capable of stopping this?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13711528

So Citi are the latest victims. This is likely to be a criminal/state attack, for what I know citi have done nothing to piss off the hactivists.

It does beg the question though, hackers taking data off one of the largest banks in the world? If they can be hit, who cant?

Should banks have a duty to their customers beyond the current? Or should we be allowed to remove information about us from their databases?

Before this gets dismissed as some craze/fad, lets put out the list of companies hit so far.

Lockheed Martin
Sony (3 times)
Citigroup
Iranian Nuclear Power Plant (not that im saying they are serious, but just an idea of what could happen if their computer systems were brought down).
5 oil firms

Most of this seems to be the Chinese, looking for oil reserves, or oil reserves we know about, for a reason I can't work out yet, but i'm sure there is a logic to it.

Add in a few criminal gangs, activists and secret services and the web is starting to become a really unsafe place for your information.

Do you care what these places are doing to protect your data?
CHINA

This is a national security concern, see article:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/31/hacking_as_act_of_war/
This is getting really serious now. I hope the US Government is putting in some serious effort into defensive and offensive cyber weapons to defeat the Chinese/Russian threat in the future.

But could it be that the Chinese are sloppy enough to get caught when they are stealing stuff, but U.S is too good to ever get caught. I don't think that the US is sitting there doing nothing. I'd like to imagine that the NSA has deep penetration of their strategic systems.

lol, sounds just like the symantec, sourcefire, and just about every other security companies press conference lol. But this is a huge issue, with cloud computing and smart mobile devices driving a huge trend in increased connectivity, you should keep an eye on security companies.

It's pretty crazy what hackers are able to do now. Makes me wish I studied more compsci

Guest1655:
thank god. i hope they keep hacking these shitty corporations.
Really? Non-profits, gov't, even churches are up for grabs. Do you have a bank account?
Nobama88:
Not sure where I saw it, but one guy estimated that 1 in 4 illegal hackers in the US are now working with the US Govt.
Estimate is a bit high, but general idea is on point: the gov't woke up a few years back and is taking this VERY seriously.

Personal favorite: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Mitnick Dude was so good, he was banned from using a phone. Now he works for uncle Sam.
