Asking for an introduction
I just met with not my manager, but my manager's manager. We just had a very informal talk that I set up about life and career path and progression and what his job entailed.
He seems to like me. I mentioned several times (and he knows) that I want to enter consulting after graduation. I even had a question asking about the strength of consulting firms in Houston. But the conversation just ended up with him telling me I'll do great and me thanking him. I was hoping that he might offer to connect me with some of his consulting contacts in Houston.
Should I be more aggressive and ask in a follow-up email? Or is it never proper etiquette to ask to be introduced. This is at a F500 company btw.
Thanks everyone!
Bump...advice please?
It's fine to ask him in an email. Definitely would have been better asking in person though at the end of the interview.
But this wasn't at an "interview".... From what I read, the OP (an intern at a F500) met with his manager's manager to talk about the manager's career and find out more about consulting in Houston.
I guess it depends on how well you know this guy and what the F500 is like, but I would not push it any further. AFAIK, most F500 internships are designed to identify and lock down FT employees. So, at the F500 I worked for, it would have been considered quite rude to meet with a VP or higher only to tell him that you're not at all interested in returning to the company. Most of the VPs at my F500 would have been pissed off or at least been bothered as you were clearly meeting him to squeeze out any contacts he might have...
