Hello all. I've browsed WSO periodically, but I decided to take the plunge and join since I'm preparing to begin the active application process. My goal is to transition from law into either consulting or investment banking.
A bit about my background: - BA in one of the social science/humanities subject areas from an elite (T15) university that isn't a target school (at least for NY, but maybe a little for Chicago?). Graduated 2011 with a cumulative undergraduate GPA of between 3.5 and 3.6 cumulative (though a bit lower at said school, since I transferred in after freshman year). - JD from a second tier law school. Shitty gpa. Some vaguely relevant coursework (at least compared to undergrad). Graduated 2014. - Law license from a UBE jurisdiction. - Since graduating, I've worked two jobs that both straddle the fence between law and finance, but the shitty/non-elite parts of both. It'd take a pretty significant amount of work to try and spin my experience in an interview as relevant, though I do have some ideas.
Currently I live in the upper midwest. I'm willing to relocate most anywhere in the US, though I am primarily interested in avoiding NY/NJ/CT/CA. So I'm hoping to land something more regional in a city like Philadelphia, Nashville, St Louis, or Houston. I would theoretically entertain Calgary as well (and as a dual citizen, I have unrestricted working rights in both the US and Canada).
I imagine in large part I'll be playing the role here of the curious onlooker, since as an industry outsider I have little of value to add, and most of what I might be inclined to ask has probably already been answered.
If anybody has any advice though, I certainly welcome it.
There are no T15 universities near Chicago which aren't targets, other than WUSTL, so I'll assume that's where you went for ugrad. What was your LSAT score?
It's too bad you didn't realize this when you were still in law school, as you would have been eligible for associate level positions.
My recommendation to you is to look into restructuring based shops in Chicago and NYC, and try to network your way in. Look for WUSTL bankers to try and give you some help as well.
