I want to go back to a flip-phone
I'm sick of using a smartphone. It's adictive, unhealthy and I feel like I was way happier before this 24/7 online culture came about. However, I'm concerned about not being able to use Messenger or WhatsApp, Slack, maybe even Outlook for business.
Do you guys think it is possible to have a career in IB without using a smartphone?
If you think smartphones are annoying you should shy away from IB like the plague. You're essentially getting paid for being available to your clients, 24/7. How are you gonna communicate with your deal team efficiently if you can't use Slack, email, texting, Whatsapp?
I wish I could too bro, but it’s not possible. Keep your notifications to a minimum except for work apps, delete social media, and you’ll be lower tech but still accessible
i second this, delete all social media, prioritize whats necessary and whats not, there is a way to find a healthy balance.
That says way more about you than the phone. Maybe address those issues.
Get a flip phone. Have 2 phones. One for business one for pleasure. You know when that shitty buzz sounds and the flip goes into action that it can only mean one thing: party time.
Light Phone 2
I feel the same way but when it comes to email and mobile banking... It's necessary.
I rocked my RAZR until like 2011
I'm getting the Punkt MP02 once it is available on US carriers. Elegantly designed minimalist phone from a Swiss design house.

That is certainly a well designed device, but I have no idea why someone would prefer that to an iPhone.
You can switch your chip - so you could have both. iPhone when necessary for work, etc - this when out and about and don't want distractions.
this is very interesting idea, and one near and dear to my heart, and while I kinda agree with CRE that you should just put the phone away, from a practical standpoint you're right, it's easy to go back into hold habits so you need to have a system that detaches you from your device. if that means a dumbphone as an add-on, great.
while the below device doesn't have a lot of talk time, it seems to solve the issue as well, works in the US, and actually tethers to your existing iphone. I'm like you, I can't get rid of the iphone because of work, but there's plenty of times where I don't need the smartphone.

edit: it's on 2G which is being phased out and is an indiegogo campaign so dubious follow through on manufacturing/service

You do realize you came onto a social media platform to vent against social media?
An online forum =/= social media
I challenge you to write CIMs and calculate a model on a scroll in candlelight. Then deliver it to your MD on horseback.
My smart phone is a necessary evil of life. That said my friends and I do really well when we are out for dinner, drinking, etc. to keep our phones in our pockets or face down on the bar.
Even further on peoples addictions to the phone is what I observe in the gym. There are very FEW who are not constantly on the phone between each set. It's like watching adults behaving like children.
I don't understand why it's an "evil" at all. The amount of things I can do with a tool that's smaller than my hand but more powerful than the computers I grew up using is awesome.
Seriously. I can watch porn in HD on my phone now.
Might as well get yourself a phone like this
if the lightphone had decent battery life, I'd buy it.
downsides are it's an indiegogo campaign so there's no certainty that the manufacturer will be there when you need them, also, it's a 2G phone which is being phased out in the US so it will be useless soon.
I think the issue is not so much that smartphones are evil, it's that we've allowed them to become counterproductive. smartphones are wonderful inventions, I can run my business from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. I can also spend 3 hours looking at memes and be dumber because of it. if you exclusively use apps to keep in touch with people you care about, you're doing it wrong, but eschewing technology completely and becoming a pariah is only possible if you're rich and famous (see steve schwarzmann).
the keys are to not let it interrupt your life. consider turning off notifications. I have all text conversations muted except for my wife, as an example. unfollow people on social media who don't add anything to your life. trust me, you don't need all those meme accounts, we were just fine 10-15 years ago when we all just told each other about what's new on collegehumor or ebaumsworld. you don't need to follow all those girls whose only claim to fame is their butt.
it's easy to detox from tech, you just gotta lose the FOMO. if you think I'm giving up my GPS or mobile banking, you're crazy. you don't see people getting social anxiety because now it's more convenient than ever to catch a cab, you see it because you're following 1,000 accounts on instagram and are getting into arguments on FB.
balance people, balance.
We need to go back to Blackberries.
