Perspective on MSc/ MBA dual degree
Hi,
I initially only considered an MBA program from a top-tier university, but i'm now considering MSc/ MBA programs if the value can be articulated.
I hold two bachelors in computer science and commerce and end goal was to continue in consulting, and then a large tech giant/ continue with seed-stage startups.
I was considering:
- MIT's LGO program
- Stanford MSc/ MBA
- Harvard MSc/ MBA
Interested to here anyone's experience with joint degree holders or programs.
tehoriginal,
Since you already have an undergrad degree in both business and computer science, I think you have to look closely both at the cost of the 2nd degree and obviously the benefit considering your goals. Will it give you more pay? More opportunity?
I have talked with and even interviewed several MBAs who had undergrad business degrees and phenomenal business experience. Each of them felt that they were benefiting or will benefit from the MBA. Here is a sampling:
MBA, Private Equity, Cop: Meet Nik Kumar, Columbia MBA 2019
Ida Valentine: Investment Banker, Inspirational Speaker, HBS 2021
Bain & Company’s Keith Bevans Talks About Careers, Life at Bain
It all boils down to what you want to accomplish by returning to school and is the benefit of each degree worth the cost. For the people interviewed above and most others I have talked to, they felt it did. GMAC data on MBA satisfaction is overwhelmingly positive. However, it really is a personal decision.
You may also want to consider Kellogg's MMM

Hi Linda,
I am right there with you in terms of the value of an MBA dont get me wrong. It's whether the MSc combination is worth it.
I'm interested to know more about the experiences students have had with the combined degree.
I'm not sure an MBA would really give you much value given your two degrees. Perhaps use the money to launch a company and build up real-world skills. You like consulting - could always start a company in that area. If you do go back to school though, and sacrifice the time and income, at that point you might as well get the MSc as well, because you have already taken on the costs of leaving the work world, and most schools let you take classes that give you credit towards both masters, and will cut your time spent (eg. cut a year off of the dual degree). So I don't recommend you go back to school, but if you do, get both degrees, because you're already there and paying the big cost
