How young can an analyst be?

Just had an interview with an analyst and the head of research at a boutique bank. I was shocked to find out that the analyst I would be working for is a year and a half older than me (I’m 23 and just graduated college, he’s 25 and graduated highschool a year before me)

Was kinda shocked to see an analyst so young (with coverage of 2 dozen+ stocks)

I assumed most analysts with that kind of coverage would be early 30s.

How young could you possibly be and have coverage? And is it really effective to be so young and be so senior in research?

Sometimes a certain set of events line up. It's primarily driven by the covering analyst leaving for the industry. Usually if the analyst goes to a competitor, the associate goes with them.

I've seen analysts as young as 24 at those smaller banks and research firms and I have seen one analyst at a MM assume coverage of 20+ names when he was 26-27 after their analyst left.
