Where to Live in NYC That Doesn't Suck

Considering moving to NYC, found a few things on Zillow and whatnot but was curious if anyone had any recommendations on nice buildings. I like being near the office so I'm looking near Midtown (I like being able to walk to the office) but I'm open to other areas, looking for a decent building to live in with a nice gym and parking garage (car nerd, not getting rid of my car). Don't feel like spending more than $4k/month but I'll go as high as $5k if I have to. Being near nightlife is not a priority for me.

I would personally avoid midtown (business/tourist zone, less “New York”). I also probably wouldn’t bring a car, finding a building with parking will be tough so I wouldn’t hold that as a must, there are garages all over the city. Budget about $400-500/month for a spot in a garage.

Depending on what you like to do (go to bars on the weekend? Be close to the park? Quieter streets?) I would recommend different areas. I really like Greenwich village, west village, soho, that general area.

5k a month dude? Grossed up pre-tax that's almost 100k. Assuming you're really a 2nd year associate, ~1/3 of your pre-tax income spent on non-equity building housing seems a bit rich. Just IMO.

If you want "Manhattan affordable" with some decent amenities, look UES, UWS or battery park. Midtown has always been a shithole, but even moreso now.
