NYC Housing for Summer Interns
For those of you who have interned in NYC during the summer before, where are some of the best options?
I'm going to be working on the waterfront near to Wall Street.
Is it worth it to pay extra for an apartment that's walking distance away from my job?
Also, is it better to rent out an apartment with a friend of mine, or should I try to get into one of those summer student housing programs like NYU, Columbia or www.studenthousing.org ?
My friend and I are looking for the best balance of price, proximity to workplace (he's working @ the same bank too) and few living restrictions.

I worked two blocks away
I worked two blocks away from the Wall St. subway stop and lived in the St. Goerge dorm (in Brooklyn Heights) from www.studenthousing.org. It was a little bit expensive, not very nice, but it was extremely convenient. It took me 15 minutes to get to work, door to door (the subway is literally below the dorm). Another negative thing is that they are very strict about visitors (have to sign them in, can't receive visitors after 10pm or so unless they were previously signed in, have to register them for them spend the night there, etc).
Summer housing
Just out of curiosity, and I know this is a stupid question, but how much does it suck to be wearing a suit in the New York heat during summer on a regular basis? Do people let it slide if you have been sweating?
It's not that hot, think
It's not that hot, think about being in Houston or Cali.
I would absolutely say live at NYU. All the other interns will and you'll have more fun getting to know people your age.
Don't do brooklyn. Do manhattan.
For your internship, you should live in the middle of it all (i.e., all the dorms in union square). For full time, you'll need to live closer to the office, but for the summer, its more fun to live where you can go out (you'll go out a LOT more as summer than as a full-time.
