Can anyone speak to how stress can affect your body?
Just a little background. I graduated from college this past August, moved from the South to NYC in January, started working in VC, studying for Series 7,63,79. 23 years old. Working between 70-80 hours a week.
Last week I was sitting at my desk after receiving a call from my mother that one of our close family friends had recently passed. Within the next hour, I felt a numbness overcoming the left side of my body. It continued to get worse until I was convinced that I needed to go to the ER. Two ER trips and a couple doctor's visits later, (I have a few more lined up in the next week to rule out anything serious), I've been told that this is probably all stress related due in part to the fact that I've experienced a lot of major changes in my life recently. They expressed that the phone call I receieved from home about our family friend was what could have sparked the fuse.
I've come to find out that stress can wreak havoc on your body, but I'm still not convinced that there isn't something more serious going on. I'm still experiencing swollen gums, headaches, numbness/tinglyness on the left side and doctors are encouraging me that there is nothing serious going on, but that it is all stress related.
I'm just curious to see if anyone else has experienced something like this? Or has any friends who have gone through something similar? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
All of those could absolutely be attributed to stress. I am obviously not a doctor but have been in the working world for a few years and if these things are happening to you already then you need to figure a way to cope with the stress better because it is only going to get worse. I find working out very regularly is my best way to not have a nervous breakdown. I've also found that putting things in perspective helps. When you feel completely overwhelmed with work remember to breakdown your priorities and you'll feel better. Work is stressful but there are things other than work that should be prioritized higher so ask yourself what is the worst outcome at work that can really happen, you can be fired. There are MANY worse things in life that can and will occur in life that are worse than your boss yelling at you or you being fired. A job is a job. Some jobs are better than others but none are worth driving yourself into a full blown panic attack.
Thanks for the encouraging words. This really put my mind at ease.
