What’s your poison?

After a long day at work, few things can beat having a good drink to relax. As you hit the couch and open the bottle, the aroma greets you like a seducing temptress. And man do you want to give in. Pouring yourself a glass and giving it a whirl, the scents tease and allure. You succumb; sipping, then drinking, feeling the warming glow and the dance of flavor as rapture sets in. You exhale hard in victory, and life is good.

Firewater, Hootch, Moonshine, Booze, Canned Heat, The Hard Stuff, Liquid Courage, Stamina in a Bottle, Social Lubricant, Truth Serum, Liquid Panty Remover, The Great Beautifier*, whatever you may call it; you know Wall Street loves it.

It may be the 14 hour banker days or the oppressive stress of the trading floor, but the consumption of alcohol is probably the greatest common denominator in Wall Street, a tradition as old as JP Morgan and practiced by all, from the aspiring analysts all the way to the top guys in PE and HF's.

And if there’s anything we've learned from last month’s posts, it’s that the people here on WSO loves a good drink too.

So tell me, what’s your poison? And how do you drink it? Beer's already been covered, and let’s save the Vino for some other day so let's stick to spirits and cocktails.

Here are some of mine:

Likes:
Scotch on the rocks- a staple since college.
Vodka on the rocks- what I drank before college.
White Russian- a remnant from my Big Lebowski party days.

Dislikes:
Absinthe- it’s not as awesome as everyone thinks.
Champagne- not my drink at all.

Enjoy your Saturday people, and to the bankers still at work, here’s to you.

-Vodka soda with lime -Gin and tonic with lime -Don Julio shots (if looking to get hammered) -Transfusions (Grape Juice, Vodka and Ginger ale) are surprisingly good, and taste like nothing, leading to bad things. Drink of choice with a cigar on the golf course -A good margarita with salt can hit the spot on occasion too

keystone light or budlight for getting shalacked

sometimes i dump some stoli into a waterbottle before going to a party

when i go to bars (fake id) i normally get scorpion bowls

Well, to quote Billy Joel (oddly enough, I'm listening to Scenes From an Italian Restaurant right now)... "Bottle of Red, Bottle of White, Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight". Honestly, I have to agree. It's all about the mood and location. There are days when I get home and the first thing I want to do is open a bottle of wine while I start to prep dinner and there are other days when I walk in and the first thing I grab is Jim Beam or Jack Daniels. There are other days when a Gin and Tonic works wonders.

Right now, I have a Sword of the Bullfighter in my hand (It's similar to a Bronx, in that it's Gin, OJ, and Vermouth. The only difference is that the Bronx uses both sweet and dry Vermouth, while the Sword of the Bullfighter uses only Sweet Vermouth.... which reminds me, I need more dry Vermouth) because I was in the mood for a Bronx but didn't have what I needed to make it.

As to my particular choice of Poison, here goes the list: Beer - Way to many to list.... but I refuse to drink PBR. See the "Beer Thread" to see what I've mentioned before.

Whiskey, Bourbon and Scotch - Traditionally neat, although I will drink Whiskey or Bourbon on the rocks, never Scotch though. If I feel like chilling the Scotch a bit, I use Whiskey Stones (http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/kitchen/ba37/). They are one of the better bar supplies that I have. I do also enjoy Manhattans, Sazaracs and will try any Whiskey-based drink at a good cocktail lounge).

Gin - Martinis (and basic variants like the Bronx, Gibson, Martinez, Sword of the Bullfighter, Vesper, etc.), Gin and Tonic, Gin and Juice, a good Gin Fizz and a Gin Sling (Either Singapore or Regular)

Vodka - I don't usually order Vodka, as I am not a fan of it. I consider it to be the ultimate "Get Drunk" spirit, as it's easy to make almost anything with and tastes like what you add to it. When I was in college, I found Vodka to be the greatest thing to use to make punch since Everclear is still illegal in PA. The only time I drink it is during Passover, and when there is nothing else around. If I'm drinking Vodka, I go w/ a Vodka Tonic, Vodka, Cranberry, a Moscow Mule (Vodka, Ginger Beer and Lime Juice) or I will see whats around and make something non-alcoholic and add vodka. I do enjoy a White Russian, but not often when I go out, as the dairy base does not necessarily go well with drinking throughout the night. By the way, if anyone drinks vodka, it's more effective to order mixed drinks w/ Well Vodka than with name brands, as most people cannot tell the difference.

Rum - Another spirit I don't usually order, unless I know what rum is available. Because of it's sugar base, I cannot stand Bacardi and usually ask before ordering if I want anything. You can actually notice a difference between rums because of the inherent sugar content. That said, when I drink rum, I will drink a Cuba Libre (or a Rum and Coke) made w/ non-white light rum or dark rum. I prefer the dark rum, as the molasses adds a bit more flavor when paired with lime. I also enjoy a good Mojito made with a light rum other than Bacardi and pray that the bartender knows how to make it. I agree with Edmundo on his call for both Mount Gay rum (I like it on the rocks) and the Goslings, as I enjoy a Dark and Stormy (Goslings Dark Rum and Ginger Beer). Other than that, I'm not really a big rum guy.

Tequila - Only if I'm making Margaritas.... Otherwise, I'm not a Tequila guy.

Other Spirits: Sambucca - Either with Espresso or on it's own. I happen to enjoy Annisette spirits, so I will also drink Ouzo (preferably over ice so it louches) but have not found Abinsthe to be as enjoyable, as it needs to be prepared perfectly. If anyone happens to be in Rome, there is a fantastic restaurant off the Trevi Fountain called Abruzzi (1 Via del Vaccaro) that serves an Emerald Green Sambucca. This is a regional drink from the Abruzzi region of Italy and happens to be amazing if you like Sambucca. Jaegermeister - I hate the overproduced, massively guidoized Jaeger that is served in Jaegerbombs, but I do enjoy true German and Austrian Jaeugermeister. Southern Comfort - It's a nice alternative to most drinks, but I'm not a huge fan.

Also, good call on the Rangpur and Cranberry Juice. It has an unusual balance. I happen to like Gin either served w/ Lime or Cucumber, and that pairs very well with either garnish.

^^^ I feel like I just took an entire class in Frieds's favorite drinks/the history of alcohols. Do I get credits?

White russians or vodka tonic, tequila shots are always fun. I actually love jagerbombs, especially since I still have the "trashy college student" excuse. Am sadly developing an incredible tolerance to them, which sucks when they get up to 11 euro a pop.

"I don't know how else to put this, but... we're over." "Okay. I disagree."

Vatorade (vodka mixed with Powerade or Gatorade)...no hangover the next day

Southern Comfort mixed with Dr. Pepper...very smooth

Strawberry margaritas and daiquiris...because strawberries are good for you

For the record, in college, I drank.... alot... I also was the one guy in my group of friends that was always behind the bar when we threw parties so I got to learn quickly about how to make drinks and what I liked and hated. It just transferred over. I mean, I have drinks in my repertoire that would require a post of that length to discuss how to make them. It also does not help that I took my school's classes on "Beer, Wine and Spirits", "Red Wines", "White Wines", and the class solely devoted to liquor. The first one was a prerequesite to the rest and as I was not an HRIM student, I had to get permission to attend all three special topic classes. The liquor one was extremely interesting and required you take BWS, Reds and Whites before you could even sign up, as we would spent the first class discussing a topic in liquor (ie American Whiskeys, in which we discussed Rye, Corn, Sour Mash and Bourbon) and the second class doing tastings. So, I learned a great deal.

Honestly, experimenting and experience are great in determining what you like.

As to Vodka Martinis... I'm not a fan. Gin over Vodka, unless you're drinking a Vesper. As to shaken, not stirred, if you are drinking Gin, shaking it bruises the gin and brings out more of the deep seeded flavors. As to vodka, it reduces the oil content and taste from non-grain vodkas.

Not a drink I would get at a bar, but for a summer sunny day in the south, Firefly sweet tea vodka and lemonade is incredible.

Kettle One w/ 7 or sprite Jack and Coke And when I was big into binge drinking my buddies created a "Benoit's Blood". It was the shot 'liquid cocaine' but in a full cup. Incredibly unpleasing to drink but one drink usually did the trick.

-Whiskey Sour -Vodka Tonic -Jager Bombs (though I'd never admit it if you asked me in person because it sounds douche-y to say)

IMPORTANT QUESTION: Is a Vodka Tonic a manly and/or gender neutral drink? I've asked a few people and the answer doesn't seem so clear.

Best, SF

Vodka Tonic is trending hard to women. If it is a go to drink for a chick when you don't know what to get her, its definately not a "manly" drink.

As for me, I drink Old Fashioneds: Orange or cherry pieces and sugar ground into the bottom of the cup Bitters Ice Jack

Firefly sweet tea Vodka is awesome with leomonade, tea, or Arnie Palmer style.

balbasur:
-apple juice no sugar - chocolate milk 2% skim - water from sink - orange juice with pulp - iced tea with sugar

I agree with navyrugby here, too many women like it for it to be called "manly".

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis, you can't trust people Jeremy

Gender neutral then? If not, I'm gonna have to change my drinking habits up a bit, lol.

Also, what about Whiskey Sours?

The perception of others is VERY important to me!

good thread. I like a good bloody mary, but they dont really take well to having several...

pretty partial to beers, and tequila shots for getting drunk. Interested in more good ideas for cool drinks when chilling in bars etc.

A friend of mine often drinks hendrick's gin with pepper and cucumber which is a pretty cool drink, but I'm not too partial to it.

I've always felt like gin and tonic/vodka tonic was more manly, though it's recently made a move to gender neutral as I've seen a loooot more chicks pick it up. Not womanly quite yet though.

Frieds, wasn't hating, just wowed by the amount you wrote

"I don't know how else to put this, but... we're over." "Okay. I disagree."

Wow, everyone here is a giant pussy. The minute people say "I only drink good beer..." I think friendless loser that I would throw things at from our frat house soph year when we'd kick them out. Wine? I don't even know how to spell that shit. Jack, Coors Light, Natty & Wild Turkey if I need to get hammered. That's it.

Whiskey and Green Tea.

This one might sound a bit off, but I'm studying abroad in Beijing this year (through May) and a popular drink at the club is Chivas and iced green tea. Its surprisingly good - and you get a good bit of caffeine in it too.

Liberty, Thanks. I do appreciate it. Honestly, it was more of an attempt to not come off as a completely unabashed knowledge bank on booze than anything else.

Sean, Whiskey and Tea goes together really well. I happen to enjoy Jack Daniels and regular old fashioned Iced Tea. I think that, depending on the sweetness of the tea, you can really temper the alcohol and bring out notes of spice, maple and a slight hint of banana (Yup, depending on the particular variety of Jack Daniels you drink, you will get more or less of certain types of flavors due to distillation and filtering because of the esters and ketones present).
