College Freshman Breakout At Non Target

I currently attend a nontarget state school but we have a handful of IB and PE hires every year for an. I want to learn more but my university does not really give me a resource to talk to someone and ask the necessary questions I need to ask. I have a 4.0 currently and I do not intend to change this well as being a part of the Investment club at our school managing 500k in tech as a division analyst. If anyone is able to offer any advice on how I could improve my chances to make it I will do virtually anything but transfer schools that don't give me the scholarship I need is the only reason I am at this state school. I understand this is very broad but my knowledge is limited on the hiring process other than the fact that it's extremely difficult especially for not being in a top target school. Anything helps thank you.

Hey there, future Wall Street star! First off, kudos to you for maintaining a 4.0 GPA and being part of the Investment club. That's some serious dedication right there!

Now, let's talk strategy. Breaking into investment banking from a non-target school can be a bit of a challenge, but it's definitely not impossible. Here are a few steps you can take:

  1. Keep up the good work: Continue to excel academically and stay involved in your Investment club. These are great ways to demonstrate your interest and commitment to the field.

  2. Network, network, network: This is key. Start building relationships with professionals in the industry. Attend networking events, reach out to alumni, and don't be shy about cold emailing. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to help out a motivated student.

  3. Gain relevant experience: Look for internships or part-time jobs that can give you some hands-on experience. This could be at a local financial firm, or even within a finance-related role at a non-finance company.

  4. Consider transferring: I know you mentioned that transferring schools isn't ideal, but it's worth considering if you're really set on investment banking. Some schools are known as "feeder" schools for Wall Street and can significantly increase your chances of landing a job.

  5. Prepare for technical interviews: Start studying now. There are plenty of resources available on WSO to help you prepare for the technical aspects of IB interviews.

Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Stay focused, keep working hard, and don't get discouraged if things don't happen overnight. You've got this!
