No typical track for PM besides knowing your companies, knowing your firm's investment style, and understanding PM functions. Some people are engineers, then go to be a senior analyst then PM. Others are analysts, senior analyst, then PM. All depends. Timelines vary but typically a few years as analyst, about 5 or more as senior analyst, then PM after about 10 years or more. Takes a while to get the knowledge to be a PM, 10 years is probably a good start. Whether or not you have your MBA, when you start at an AA shop, you will not be able to add much value and the first couple years will be tough. That is why it is generally better to get in as soon as you can so you can get involved with certain companies, industries, research or PM functions, etc. May not seem like it, but it is not possible to just jump in and know what you are doing in this industry (not implying that you were saying this, just want you to understand that it takes time).
