B.U. - they're actually one of, if not the first, to partner with the CFA Institute. Their MSIM program prepares you for the Level I.
Ya, BU is the only one Ive heard of that is specific to IM. Its pretty heavy on the CFA material. Would suggest saving the 40-50k and just self studying while doing the CFA. Would be weighted similarly by interviewees probably, and would show the same quantitative skills.

Hi, I am thinking of doing the MS Financial Management program at BU. Could you tell me how the placement is after graduation?
BU has a solid program. Many schools are CFA partner programs, but BU is on of the only ones focused only on IM. University of San Fran has a masters in financial statement analysis.
Most MSF programs would fit the bill. Just pass L1 or L2 while doing the MSF and you should be fine.
Based on what I've read here and else where, MBAs (from M7) are the best options for someone looking to make a career change such as myself. I recently stumbled upon the BU program and am curious how well suited it is for career changers (in case I do not obtain M7 admission) or would a second tier MBA still be the better option.
I am not sure if the MSIM would be too focused for someone without a finance background and thus the MBA would be the better option however I am not entirely sold on the value/worth of MBA outside the top programs. On the other hand the MSIM caters to working individuals so that is appealing as well.
BU will no longer provide IM program starting this fall. USF requires 2 solid year relating experience
Oh man, that sucks. BU's IM program was pretty unique and really served that niche well. Will be sad to see it go. Any more info on why and if it is being replaced by anything?
Temple University has an excellent program on the east coast and St. Mary's out west and Pace University which has a good business program.
Almost forgot that there are other programs that have almost the exact same curriculum but program is named under something other than MSIM. Creighton University has a program that preps you for L1 and the name is MS Securities Analysis and Portfolio Mgmt.
Please do not waste your time with any program at Pace, St. Mary's, Temple, Creighton or anything that states as its goal preparation for the CFA. The former will not get you access you access to any IM seats, while the latter is best done on your own time at a fraction of the cost. Remember, the goal is to get a job (which passing levels of the CFA can help to do) and not to just pass the CFA. If you have the experience and resume, go for a top MBA and specialize in IM. If not, go to the best masters of finance program you can find and specialize in IM. If neither of those are options get a role a junior doing portfolio attribution, pass your levels 1+2 while you work and then look for a research associate seat internally. Those will give you much better options than going to a "program in investment management." Assumption here is that you want to do fundamental (equities or fixed income corporates) IM.

So i am thinking of doing a masters in IM and looking at the career prospects most of it is trading related. My question is if i can break into IB as well if I eventually dont want to be a trader? or are masters in banking preferred way more?
Look up people who've done the program you're looking at (or tell us if you don't mind) or talk to the schools career center, it's very specific school by school and year by year how recruiting is for certain degrees. From what I know a Masters in IM is not geared towards getting you into IB or S&T, but I could be wrong. Again, very proprietary.
