Natural progression opportunities in AM - FI

Working as a buy side fixed income analyst for a mutual fund covering credits and working alongside portfolio managers. Strategy is Long Only and I cover specific sectors. As I look to advance my career, what opportunities and career paths can I look out for?

I left a CLO / mutual fund manager for a hedge fund. From what I could tell the natural progression was just junior analyst > senior analyst > junior PM > senior PM. In terms of other opportunities, seems dependent on the person’s skills, but headhunters will likely steer you to credit roles. Private credit / direct lending, distressed / special sits, credit L/S, structured credit, corp dev / treasury are some options. Helps to have IB / private deal experience to switch to private credit; likewise, it helps to have RX background for distressed funds. Credit background helps for infra PE, but less so for tech buyouts. If you have sector coverage, then probably opens more doors in that sector. That being said, if you can prove underwriting / modeling competency and network into interviews, then should be fine.
