Portfolio Analytics to AM

Long story short, I have an offer to work in a Portfolio Analytics/Reporting role. The role is very data-analysis heavy and will definitely provide an opportunity to learn skills like Python, SQL. The company provides full reimbursement for CFA. Could this role translate into a FO/investment exit assuming I learn python and pass some CFA levels?

The Portfolio Analytics role involves analyzing performance of portfolios, quarterly reports, automation improvements, cash flow analysis and more for a variety of investment portfolios ranging from institutional to PE.

"Vandelay Industries" I wouldn't count on this leading to a fundamental investment role. Not to say it can't be done, but the skillset you would be building doesn't have a lot of overlap with the path you want it to lead to.

I'd agree with the fundamental role, but I could easily see the ability to chug massive amounts of data leading into a macro/quant role, particularly combined with getting your charter and knowing the other data systems. My simple rule of thumb is that FactSet is for in-depth research and backtesting strategies, M* is for competitor analysis, and Bloomberg is for the rest. Going from there to a FO (Sales) role is unlikely, but do you really want that over being an analyst or possibly even an eventual PM?

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

The goal would be to eventually be in an investing role. If my skill set makes me a better candidate for a quant, then so be it even though I learned how to be a fundamental investor.

Thanks for the insights on the individual systems and how they may add value. I’m not entirely sure I would have access to all of them, but I’m sure I could learn on my own as well.
