Worth trying to trade up low-tier AM for a better offer in Y1?

I'm starting at a fairly unknown LO asset manager soon as an associate with a focus on equities. I'm currently at a top target and regret not pursuing more prestigious firms in the recruiting cycle. Is it worth applying for bigger AMs and MBB consulting grad positions even as I start my first year? Or should I just ride out what I have and see if I want to transfer after staying a couple of years.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for professionals in the asset management industry to consider their options and the potential for moving to a more prestigious firm. Here's a breakdown of considerations for your situation:

  • Early Career Moves: In the early stages of your career, especially coming out of a top target school, you have a bit more flexibility to move around without raising too many eyebrows. It's often easier to make a switch earlier rather than later.

  • Prestige and Exit Opportunities: As you've noted, prestige can play a role in future opportunities. Top-tier firms often provide a wider network and more recognized experience, which can be beneficial if you decide to pursue opportunities elsewhere later on.

  • Learning and Development: Consider the learning opportunities at your current firm. Sometimes, smaller or less known firms can offer more hands-on experience and responsibilities earlier in your career, which can be invaluable.

  • Networking: Regardless of where you start, networking should be a continuous effort. Building relationships can lead to opportunities that may not be openly advertised.

  • Timing: If you're just starting, it might be worth giving your current position a fair shot to understand what you like and dislike about it. However, if you're set on moving, applying to other positions sooner rather than later could be advantageous.

  • Market Conditions: Keep an eye on the job market. If there's a high demand for associates, it might be a good time to apply elsewhere.

  • Personal Fulfillment: Consider your job satisfaction and career goals. If you believe that a more prestigious firm will significantly contribute to your professional fulfillment and career trajectory, it might be worth exploring options immediately.

In summary, while there's value in gaining experience where you are, if you're already considering a move, it doesn't hurt to explore your options. Just make sure to weigh the potential benefits against the risks of leaving a new position too quickly. Remember, the grass isn't always greener on the other side, but sometimes it's worth taking a peek to confirm. Swing from those vines with care, and good luck!
