A operations consulting internship?

Hi everyone! So far I have two possible summer plans (Student at target, GPA~3.50)
1) working at Alvarez & Marsal's public sector division under practice operations (Finance, Marketing, HR, IT, Knowledge Management, etc.) fom mid-June to late August
2) working at an IB boutique (unpaid) in New York for 6 weeks then a risk management program/ consulting firm for 8 weeks. The company is quite big (with around 15 offices around the world) and is probably only famous in the risk management industry. The job requires me to do financial forecasting and research on financial default for various models, among other things.

I don't know what I want to do in the long run yet. I know I don't want to do IB (but it would be nice to try it out for 6 weeks) and I don't think risk management is something I will be interested in doing (but the internship offers good skills). I think I want to go into consulting after graduation, but as you can see, the job is not exactly "consulting".
What should I do?

Are you getting school credit? Otherwise, how is this legal? A bunch of the media companies have gotten thrashed in the last few years for unpaid internships.

To answer your question, though, I'd choose door number 1. An unpaid IB internship, when you don't want to do IB long-term just sounds like masochism.

 

Many boutiques and smaller firms still dont pay interns. My brother's internship this year at a smaller firm is unpaid. I think while these smaller/boutique internships are "unpaid", interns still receive travel stipends and sometimes laptops to conduct work. There may not be a check at the end of the month, but they still are receiving something.
