are consultants just way more pleasant than bankers?
I’m trying to lateral out of banking, I know the hours can be bad during diligence cases and the work more intense but my best friend at MBB hasn’t worked 1 weekend since starting, has multiple close friends from his firm who actually enjoy hanging out outside of work, people come from diverse backgrounds and actually have hobbies besides golf and being a dick, several people I’ve met even met their girlfriends/boyfriends through consulting, etc. like holy shit I know it pays less but all of that seems like such a lifestyle upgrade and you work on more than comps and model refreshes with a dick head bald VP
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your observations about consultants being more pleasant and having a better lifestyle compared to bankers are echoed by many. Consulting does tend to foster a more collaborative and people-oriented culture. Consultants often highlight the following lifestyle advantages:
Work-Life Balance: While consulting hours can still be intense (70+ hours during busy projects), many consultants report having weekends off more consistently compared to banking. Your friend's experience of not working weekends aligns with this trend.
Collegial Environment: Consulting firms, especially MBB, emphasize team dynamics and culture. Many consultants genuinely enjoy spending time with their colleagues outside of work, and firms often prioritize hiring people who fit well culturally.
Diverse Backgrounds: Consultants often come from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds, which can make for a more interesting and dynamic workplace. This diversity also extends to hobbies and interests, as you've noted.
Broader Skillset: Consulting work often involves strategic problem-solving, client interaction, and varied projects, which can feel more engaging than repetitive tasks like comps and model refreshes in banking.
Personal Connections: It's not uncommon for consultants to form close friendships or even romantic relationships within their firms, given the collaborative nature of the work and frequent travel together.
That said, the trade-offs include lower pay compared to banking, especially at the junior levels, and the potential for grueling travel schedules. If lifestyle and culture are your priorities, consulting could indeed be a significant upgrade for you.
