At a crossroads

Hey guys,

Just need a little incite, I just graduated in May from a non-target with a 3.6 in Accounting. I have internship experience in Internal Audit at a Fortune 100 and in Risk Consulting at a Big 4. I received an offer at the Big 4 but it doesn't start for another year so I figured i could take the time to maybe find a better job to start my career.

Over the past 2 months I've applied to about 100 banks but I've realized that i'm being way too optimistic, especially in today's economy, to land anything at a bank. With that all being said what consulting firms are reasonable with my credentials (if any) and would 3-5 years in consulting help me getting into a top finance MBA program down the road? Thanks a lot guys.

Question: what will you be doing at Big 4 and how do you feel about that? Have you considered using Linked In for job hunting? The later point was brought up because I hear good things about the service ... it is relatively new.

As for an MBA, anywhere where you will succeed. If you are that set on consulting ASAP, look towards boutiques. How's your SAS expertise?

haha yea i realized that typo and was too lazy to correct, thanks though.

I did not enjoy the work I was doing during the internship at all, it was more of an accounting consulting than business consulting. To be honest I'm not sure if consulting is where I want to be but I am an accounting major trying to break into finance and I was told consulting may be the bridge I need... thoughts?

As for Linked In, I haven't used it for job searching but I will look into it, thanks a lot.

Linkedin has been a solid tool for me... i end every "self-serving networking" conversation with "hey, do you have linkedin?" and then whip out the old trusty android and stack contacts... after that i go home and document the context of each relationship/conversation for later on down the road...

Get it!

I linkedin'd a lot to get my job too, definitely. I'm not quite as organized as ConanDBull ^ but you can definitely find out who are say the Partners of McKinsey in say Hong Kong, figure out their email adds, and like email them and establish some contact.

OP - are you just randomly filling out online apps and posting them? That'll never work, esp coz you're from a non target. You have to network - ideally through a contact, but even blind networking involving Linkedin and just cold-emailing can be very effective. It got me my job.

Yea, i've emailed about 50 bank MD's and got a few calls but it was just them telling me they will forward my resume to head of HR. Is there any secret list of Consulting firms with email addresses like they have with I.B.

If a sentence is a question, it ends with a question mark. I don't know what that list is, but if you can find one person's email address from a firm you can figure out the email format, then substitute in the names of other people you find.

One of those lights, slightly brighter than the rest, will be my wingtip passing over.

And to answer your question about which firms are appropriate with your credentials... maybe the Big 4 in their advisory groups. And certainly any boutiques that you can dig up.
