Bain vs Tech at GS/MS/JPM

Hi!

Friend is an interesting spot. Has a Technology offer at a top IB, but also just got a Bain offer.

Tech offer money is $140k+ which is great, while consulting obviously a bit less but probably has better exit opps.

End goal is VC or Big Tech Strategy.

take the bain offer. two things: first, i'm sure your friend is a CS major and thus may hate life doing much less interesting and challenging work in consulting, but bain is a great name and will get ur friend where s/he wants to be.

secondly, tech at IB is still 'back office', which means the front office people are going to look down on you despite them working on aligning logos and you doing actual work. while you could move to a FAANG, i wouldn't turn down a bain offer for that. grats to your friend

Hands down Bain here too. Lot of consulting work is far more interesting for someone aligned in tech than banking ever will have. Reason I say this is because banking is too narrow focused for technological applications. Versus consulting is a different application of technology with every client you have.

Idk bro, if you were to tell me that the rest of my career would be to keep building an algo to execute trades, I'd fucking shoot myself. But maybe that's because that's just my personality and I always want new projects to work on.

Great, thanks guys. Was a bit biased towards bank because I also work there, but I do agree that MBB opens more options for her later
