BB operations analyst sophomore summer internship -> MBB?

Hey All,

Want some advice on what would best position me for MBB junior internship. I realized I wanted to move into consulting/business relatively late in my sophomore year. I was wondering if a BB operations analyst internship would be fine for a consulting internship as a junior, or should I keep searching?

I received an offer for a BB as an operations analyst, where I'll be working on projects to increase efficiency(I won't be doing most day-to-day stuff as an intern based on my conversations with the previous intern and hiring manager).

I've also worked for governmental and large non-profits(thinks Teach For America/Peace corp/urban Teacher) in the past where I've done operational work, as well as led a large team of tutors and worked with a school client.

Currently also in one of my semi-target school's top consulting club and a leader in two other relatively large organizations.

I could give more details if you PM me.

Thanks so much!

I think you will not be able to secure a consulting internship in time (I am assuming you are talking about Summer 2023 and not Summer 2024), and you should just take the offer you have at hand even if it is not optimal.

Given your past of doing Operations work & your internship will be Operations with some process improvement work, your best bet for FT Consulting recruiting will be Operations Process Consulting or Implementations at a Big 4 or maybe an Accenture/Booz Allen type firm. Additionally, it may help your path if you decide what path of consulting you would like to pursue, Management Consulting usually being the most competitive.

Best advice I can give is try to pump up your GPA this semester and next semester, and get ready to be aggressive with FT recruiting if consulting is what you want to do.

I meant consulting recruiting for 2024, I'm currently a sophomore, and the operations role would be for 2023. I want to pursue management and strategy consulting first, and operational consulting second. My gpa is a 3.9. Given that, would an operations intern for 2023 at the BB be decent for 2024 summer analyst recruiting?

Thanks for clarifying! Definitely take the 2023 BB Ops internship. While you are there, document every "case study" & project you worked on so you can leverage those during your interviews for summer recruiting for 2024.

Given the fact you have a high GPA & are at a semi-target that will certainly help your chances. What I would recommend is to reach out to alumni to network from your consulting club who are now professionals in the industry, talk to them via coffee/zoom chats to better understand the various firms offerings, products & culture. The rest is up to your ability during interviews and nailing the case interviews

A side note is, it is possible during your summer internship at the BB you may become interested in IB/ER/AM after spending some time at the bank. A benefit of having an internship your sophomore year is to take advantage of being on-site and if you are at all interested, to reach out to the alumni at the bank just to make the connection in person!
