Booz Allen Hamilton discussion

Can anyone speak to the status of BAH? Are they still viewed as a large presence/prestigious in the consulting industry? Are there good exit opportunities from there? I understand that they have moved away from general management consulting and primarily focus on government/public sector technology contracts. They seem to have had lots of success over the past years/decades. What is your opinion of them? Thanks!

Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) has indeed shifted its focus over the years, moving away from general management consulting to primarily working on government and public sector technology contracts. This transition began in the early 2000s, when BAH moved into operations and tech work, which diluted its prestige in the strategy consulting space. This shift eventually led to Carlyle buying out the legacy strategy partners and splitting the business. While BAH has had success in its niche, this move has positioned it differently compared to traditional MBB firms.

In terms of prestige, BAH is no longer considered on par with MBB firms in the broader consulting industry. However, it remains a significant player in the federal consulting space, with strong name recognition, particularly in government and public sector work. The firm is well-regarded for its training opportunities and investment in its people, which can be a strong draw for professionals entering the field.

As for exit opportunities, they are diverse but depend heavily on the individual's interests, network, and skill set. Many professionals from BAH transition to other federal consulting firms, tech companies, politics, non-profits, or government roles. Approximately 40-50% of exits are unrelated to government work. For those looking to pivot to finance or commercial strategy consulting, pursuing an MBA at a top program is often a common path. Additionally, some professionals move to other major consulting firms like Deloitte, PwC, or Accenture for better pay, promotions, or different types of engagements.

Overall, BAH is a strong choice for those interested in federal consulting and public sector work, but it may not offer the same level of prestige or breadth of opportunities as MBB or other top-tier commercial consulting firms.
