Boutique to MBB
I am a senior and I am planning on working at Stax, a boutique consulting firm. I was wondering if it were possible to re-recruit after working there a few years to an MBB, or if MBB's would rather take fresh college students. Did I ruin my chance at MBB or do I have to go to business school for another shot?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a boutique consulting firm like Stax to an MBB is absolutely possible, but it depends on several factors:
Timing and Openings: MBB firms often hire laterals, but the availability of roles depends on the timing of openings. It's crucial to keep an eye on their hiring cycles and maintain connections with recruiters.
Experience and Performance: Your experience at Stax can be a strong asset if you excel in your role. Demonstrating leadership, client impact, and a track record of success will make you a competitive candidate.
Networking: Reach out to your old networks, recruiters, and even alumni from your school who are at MBB firms. Informational conversations can help you understand the process and position yourself better.
Business School Option: While it's not mandatory, attending a top MBA program can significantly increase your chances of breaking into MBB. With a strong undergrad degree, a few years at Stax, and a top MBA, you would be a highly attractive candidate.
Direct Lateral Move: If you prefer not to go to business school, you can still aim for a lateral move. MBB firms do hire experienced professionals from boutique firms, especially if you can showcase unique skills or industry expertise.
In summary, working at Stax does not ruin your chances at MBB. You can either aim for a lateral move after gaining experience or pursue an MBA to re-enter the recruiting process. Both paths are viable, and your success will depend on how you leverage your experience and network.

MBB bar is on the floor in 2025, totally possible to join MBB from any background. With prior consulting exp. you have a massive advantage already. I know people who were unemployed for a year after graduating from a target but still landed MBB new grad positions
Very insightful, prospect in IB lol
