Bringing Personality to a Final Round / Partner Interview
Per title... I have a FR with partners at an MBB firm and I've been told that it's mostly about fit and how your personality shines through. Obviously I know to be myself, be confident, etc., but does anyone have any advice or pointers abut what might make one shine as an MBB worthy personality?
I think this is an especially good question and actually why I’ve been cut in final. The best course of action is be vigilant in reading the room and matching energy. Start off safe ish while being charismatic and become more comfortable / strictly professional based on the person across from you. And then in general at the end of interview or if you ever have a chance to talk be interesting and have an interesting conversation, start with a specific thing in the firm that they may be familiar with, whether it’s the topic of your assigned case, an industry, recent insight, and chew the fat. Also great to smile, look good, and just come across as likable.
I would say to not underestimate the importance of letting your personality shine through during the case as well. It's usually the case that the partners design the case themselves, and I was told during one interview that it was based on a previous case that the partner had worked on. When you're giving your answer or brainstorming, talk as if you're genuinely interested in the topic at hand and are really enjoying thinking through the issue, even if you're struggling. If it's a topic you're familiar with, definitely take advantage of that and let your background knowledge seep through.
You're being evaluated to see if you're someone they can work together with, as well as whether you can be put in front of a client. If you mess up and they correct you, smile and thank the partner for pointing you in the right direction. If you're not sure about an answer, phrase it in a way that is confident but still shows its limitations. These small details will help you stand out if your baseline is already solid.
