Capital One Strategy

Just received an offer for Capital One Strategy. Honestly don't know much about the group but would like to go into consulting for the first few years of my career. Couple of questions:

  • It seems like C1 Strategy is closer to C1 Business Analyst? I have a final round for BA as well but am currently less interested because it seems much more data science-y?
  • What does mentorship at C1 Strategy look like?
  • Exits?
  • Pay?

Ty!

I'd personally put C1 Strategy below MBB but on par with Tier 2. Strategy is way better than BA so don't bother with that interview.

Exits are mostly in FS, but they place pretty well into bschool (top 7). Best part is the hours: 40-50 hours a week tops. I think the culture is pretty great from what I've seen as well

Personally I would go with MBB over C1 Strat. Wider exit opportunities, get to experience more fields, etc. I would consider C1 Strat over MBB if; you know you will be going to an MBA program in a few years, highly priorities WLB, you do not care about PE, and you know that you would like Tech and FinTech exits. The reason why I say that is because pay is more or less comparable for the first few years, and if you would not want to go into PE and you're good with the C1's exits (or you're planning to get an MBA shortly), then the better hours and culture pre-MBA with similar enough pay for that time period are a pretty good deal. You really need to hit those points though and hit them hard though, otherwise MBB remains ahead. (I think there might be an argument to be made that, if you really really want to do Strategy work, then C1 Strat might win out over Bain. At least according to my friends there they have only been on PE DD matter. Someone with more knowledge than just second hand stories from friends though would need to clarify. Still I think Bain's wider exits would win out, but I could see the argument there).

Business Analyst - If you have an offer from C1 Strat I wouldn't continue the BA process. I say that as a current C1 BA, personally I took it over a T2 (I like the tech/fintech exits C1 people usual go to and I'm not interested in PE and planning on an MBA). Strategy is generally not data science-y. BA is more data-science, but I wouldn't call it data science. It does depend on your position/rotation though, so a few would be more like data science. If you don't like coding odds are you will not be put in a position where you would have to. Most BA's will work with SQL, Google sheets or Excel depending on the team, Slides, etc. A few teams will use Python, but by and large you won't be touching Python in most rotations. There is also a dedicated Data Analyst job family & ADP position now that does more of the Data science stuff. Data Analyst, Business Analyst, and Strategy Analyst are all part of their ADP program, but I would say that is more for social reasons, streamlining training, development, etc. Business Analysts and Strategy Analysts, while both part of ADP, do different things.

Exits: Usually to Tech or Fintech, or good MBA programs. Strategy places into really good MBA programs. ADPs have gone to Meta, Google, PayPal, Visa, Square, Stripe, etc.

Pay: Depends on location, but it should be specified in the offer letter. 113k for NYC and 106k for McLean is what I heard last. Strategy and BA both get promotions pretty fast, with Strategy getting them the fastest. I'm not sure what Senior associate/Analyst mid point pay is being changed to right now, but I know Manager is ~150k in McLean which is 2 promos away (its possible to get that in 2 years, but not likely. Will probably take 3-4).

Its a great program, but I put MBB over it. Personally I put it above T2, but I am biased based on my own priorities/weighing of factors so you should get multiple people's POV on that. C1 Strat is a hard offer to get, so also congratulations on getting the offer!

Thanks so much! Really appreciate the thoughtful response - definitely gave me a lot more confidence on the role. I feel like they didn't really tell me too much about it on the website/during interviews haha
