Career positioning

i am a current finance major at the University of Kentucky with a 3.5 G.P.A, my FMVA certification under my belt, and a certification in all Microsoft office platforms. As far as finance jobs go my resume will be dead. I have work experience as a manger at a Vehicle restoration shop for a year and a project manager at a landscaping company a year after that. How well do you think I am positioned to break into consulting. Is my work experience relevant at all? If you know my school, how do you believe it will be viewed when I go out of state? thank you! you all have been very helpful, love wso

Kentucky isn't a target school - let's call it what it is. To get an internship / FT offer at a reputable consulting firm, I would lean heavily on Kentucky alumni who are currently working at firms you'd like to be at. Have informal chats, hear their story, and maybe down the road you can ask for a referral into their firm. I had a similar path - its hard, but not impossible. Good luck!!

What year are you?

Your GPA is a bit low, you go to a non-target school that isn't ranked highly, and you don't really have related experience. To plan around that I would:

(1) Raise GPA to at least 3.7 before senior year if possible

(2) Network with alumni or others at firms you're interested in and get referrals - consider small firms as opposed to MBB/T2/B4 as they may have less defined/strict recruiting pipelines

(3) Get a related internship through on-campus recruiting to build your resume. I'm guessing UK has a number of F500's or other large firms recruit on-campus for finance internships

Edit: Your work experience is good because it shows you can do hard work and manage people so could be great to get an internship through on campus recruiting, but I doubt it'd be enough for a consulting job
