Chances of breaking into MBB after H/S MBA with irrelevant pre-MBA experience?
Say you graduate from HBS or the GSB, but you only have two years experience in an irrelevant field, say as an engineer or some other job. Would the MBA give you a good chance of getting into MBB regardless?
Yes. That's kinda the whole point of it.
To be honest I think the harder part would be getting into one of those schools with only two years experience. It would have to be the 2 + 2 program or some absolutely incredible entrepreneurial idea to likely get in that young. I believe the average work experience is 5-6 years.
Yes, HBS or GSB would give you a very good chance of landing an interview. The rest is up to you.
You could also recruit as an experienced hire pre-MBA, especially with the current hiring frenzy. You'd come in at the pre-MBA level, but possibly with some tenure credit (higher pay and faster promotion than fresh out of UG).
Yup, if you can get into MBB without an MBA that's probably the smarter move financially given the tuition and earnings opportunity cost during a two year MBA.

Having an MBA vs not is the difference between starting at ~$110k all in and ~$200k all in. The MBA is probably worth it, even from a pure financial perspective.
Experienced hires at MBB start at a higher salary than those straight out of undergrad, so that's definitely a vast underapproximation. Additionally, you forget the MBA is not free, it's about $250k on top of the missed earnings. If you skip the MBA you end up at approximately the same pay without the massive loans.
