I might be the only one to say this, but just be honest.

If it's for an internship, it's not unreasonable that you haven't decided firmly on a career yet and you want to keep your options open. Say that you have been lucky enough to receive an offer for an internship in an unrelated field (not audit....so true, but I probably wouldn't say which firm) and you'd like to explore whether it's possible to adjust the dates of your internship to allow you to pursue both.

They'll either say yes or no and you can take it from there.

At the end of the day, they're either going to accommodate you or not. In all likelihood, the story isn't going to make that much of a difference to them. If you're mother was dying they'll either have a process to reschedule or they won't. Similarly if you have another commitment.

What it's really going to come down to is how much they want you at the firm.

I think what you see on WSO is a small microcosm on grads......the ones who know exactly what they want and wouldn't consider anything else. The vast bulk of people are not like that, and recruiters realise that people (when applying for internships) potentially haven't decided what they want to do for a career and are still wanting to try different things out. If they want you, they'll accommodate that.
