Changes in Consulting
What are some of the biggest changes in consulting norms over the past 5-10 years?
I recently watched a speech given by a former Deloitte partner outlining the cost benefits and knowledge that can be attained through outsourcing - not just call centers and manufacturing, but an actual consulting team on an international project. He also described the impact of current communication technology and how the huge expense of flying consultants to the client is being taken out because of new means of communication - cloud, etc.
What are other important shifts that have taken place?
One important shift I have seen is the growth of boutique consulting firms. Smaller, more specialized firms are able to brand and market themselves as experts via the internet, speaking events, and conferences. This is giving more competition to big consulting companies. Clients are eager to work with local firms who have very specialized expertise, local knowledge, and sometimes a slightly lower rate.
Outsourcing has grown incredibly. KPO is a new form that came about w/in the last 10 yrs, I believe.
For several yrs after the crash, consulting firms were hit pretty hard. They put a bigger emphasis on selling cost management projects (e.g. sourcing/procurement, shared services). They even pursued unconventional payment methods like profit sharing to make the sales.
I just read an article about how the internet has changed consulting. With all of the resources available, what businesses still need to hire consultants and what do consultants need to do to keep themselves distinguishable, creditable, and needed. Here is the link:
