Closed/Special invite list

I am from a top-tier b-school and got special closed invitations from a few consulting firms for networking whereas did not get invites from a few others. Does that mean that the consulting firms would pick and choose students from these closed invite list for interviews ahead? Or that wouldn't be the case? Asking since there was one Big4 firm with which I had minimal contact however, I got an invite to their event which was super strange and there was one from the MBBs from which I was expecting an invite given the amount of coffee chats I had with them but did not end up receiving one. How does all this work? Still clueless and unclear as to how to target and approach these firms.
