Consulting Internship/FT Preparation
Hey guys, I'm a rising sophomore at Amherst majoring in economics (and possibly doubling in history) with a 3.5 with a lot of interest in working in consulting in the future. I'm pretty involved on campus and will be on one of the college's student boards in a financial manager function. I've had experience in the past working at startup incubator and accelerator programs and am currently working a consulting internship with a smaller firm, getting to do some hands on strategy and operations work with a couple of different case studies. I've really enjoyed my work so far and have set some long term goals to, hopefully, work at one of the MBB firms after college. I know my gpa is on the low side so I'll work to get that up to at least a 3.7 this year. I'm a URM so I will be applying to Bain and Mckinsey's diversity programs (both recruit at Amherst) but would like to know what sort of preparation might serve me the most later down the line for junior year internships/full time recruiting.
Are there any specific skills that I should focus on now to help differentiate myself?
How would you recommend going about networking? I currently really enjoy one of the industries I've been working with and have thought to contact someone who works in that industry for an MBB; would that be a good idea or should I present myself as more of a generalist?
Any general advice for breaking into consulting is also welcome; I'm trying to learn as much as I can.
Thanks
