contacting client?

I am 6 months into the job and when trying to cold call a bunch of people in the industry, I accidentally contacted an engineer from the target company (doing a DD). I didn't know the company he was representing was also the target's (it's a strange structure - I didn't know about it until we finished creating our value chain). It seemed like he knew the company was up for sale since he asked which office I was working out of and which client I was working for. I didn't respond to him, but I am genuinely scared that this can turn into legal issues. My questions were pretty basic - "I want to understand how this works" and wasn't proprietary.... but the fact that I contacted a client ...although I didn't know at the time really worries me :(
