Decided right after graduating as a premed that I want to enter into Consulting
Hey everyone,
I'm 23 years old and just graduated this past May. I was preparing to apply to medical school and wanted to take one gap year before starting medical school, but I got back a lower than expected MCAT score. I'm currently working in a research lab and there's a medical doctor who's been pushing me to try out a business related position, as he's involved in a biotech startup and wishes that he studied finance during undergrad.
A little about myself is that I've been interested in medicine since a young age, but I also became interested in business through trading stocks since 2014. My MD coworker, along with the fact that nearly all of my friends are in IB or consulting have made me become obsessed with getting into the business world in this last week.
I have no work experience related to business and only have the usual premed experiences. On my resume, I have that I'm a research technician that uses Excel and PowerPoint to analyze and present experimental data, a private tutor for the past 4 years, a technician in an ophthalmology office, and a Mandarin interpreter for the Board of Elections. Here are my academic stats:
- NYU CAS - Global Public Health Major, Chemistry Minor
- GPA: 3.72, Cum Laude
- ACT: 34/36 (IDK if this is important)
Could any of you offer advice on what my best course of action would be to secure a consulting gig? I am open to other roles and was originally aiming for roles in Finance, but recently shifted my focus towards consulting after not hearing back from any of my Finance applications that I've applied to and hearing that consulting is more open to diverse backgrounds. I'm also fine with going anywhere in the country.
I did receive a Hirevue from 1 consulting firm for a Health-related consulting position but have not heard back yet. I sent out applications to McKinsey, Bain, and OW two days ago and will be speaking to friends who are at all three firms. Would any firms be great for me to apply to because of my background?
I would look into life sciences focused boutiques like ClearView, Trinity, Putnam, Health Advances, etc. I know CV has a ton of premeds and generally those types of firms like people with science/research backgrounds. I'm mainly familiar with the campus recruiting process, and since you already graduated, I'm not sure what exactly your application timeline looks like. However, I'd try to reach out to alum at those firms and see if you can get a referral. Consulting market is hot right now so try to take advantage. Good luck!
