engg majors?

Is it true that if you have a decent gpa in a major like engineering, applied math, or some sort of related field, then that's looked upon better than a good gpa in a history type thing?

I've heard things like "consulting firms love math/engineering majors." And yet the firms say "major in whatever." What's the real story?

They LOVE engineering/applied math majors. I was told point-blank in an interview that engineerings majors do best in consulting.
