FAANG Financial Analyst > MBB?

Hi All, starting a role soon as a financial analyst at Amazon and was wondering whether it’s possible to go to MBB or even B4 Strategy teams from this position. Background is: internships in audit, asset management, infra private equity & private credit (didn’t get a return offer due to headcount issues with the firms I was at). Also have a MFin from a low semi target in the UK (Think Cass, Kings etc). Thanks in advance!

Based on previous WSO threads, transitioning from a financial analyst role at a FAANG company like Amazon to MBB or Big 4 Strategy teams is certainly possible, though it may not be the most straightforward path. Here are some insights:

  1. Skill Set and Experience:

    • Your diverse background in audit, asset management, infrastructure private equity, and private credit, combined with your upcoming role at Amazon, provides a strong foundation in financial analysis and corporate finance.
    • MBB firms value candidates with robust analytical skills and a strong understanding of corporate finance, which you will further develop at Amazon.
  2. Educational Background:

    • Having an MFin from a low semi-target school in the UK (e.g., Cass, Kings) is beneficial, though not as strong as a top-tier MBA. However, it still demonstrates a solid academic foundation.
  3. Pathways to MBB:

    • Direct Transition: While rare, it is possible to move directly from a financial analyst role to MBB, especially if you can demonstrate specific skills or industry knowledge that MBB firms find valuable.
    • MBA Route: The most straightforward path to MBB is often through an MBA from a top-tier business school. This route provides networking opportunities and a structured recruiting process.
  4. Big 4 Strategy Teams:

    • Transitioning to Big 4 Strategy teams might be slightly more accessible compared to MBB. Your experience at Amazon and your diverse internship background can make you an attractive candidate for these roles.
  5. Networking and Positioning:

    • Leverage your network and seek informational interviews with current consultants at MBB and Big 4 firms. This can provide insights into the transition process and help you position yourself effectively.
    • Highlight your experience at Amazon, emphasizing any strategic projects or high-impact work you are involved in.

In summary, while transitioning from a financial analyst role at Amazon to MBB or Big 4 Strategy teams is challenging, it is achievable with the right positioning, networking, and possibly further education (like an MBA).
