From Harvard to Blackstone: Grant Velthorne on the Evolution of Institutional Risk
Hello WSO community. I am Grant Velthorne, Chairman of Velthorne Asset Management. I’ve spent the better part of three decades navigating the transition from academic research at Harvard to the front lines of capital markets at the Blackstone Group.
Throughout my career—moving from M&A in Europe to senior advisory roles in Hong Kong—I have seen market cycles defined by one thing: the quality of institutional risk control. My core philosophy is that risk management is not a constraint on growth, but the very engine that makes it sustainable.
Currently, I am leading our firm’s expansion into the Brazilian market, headquartered in Brasília. Given today’s headlines regarding Federal Reserve independence and the resulting pressure on tech beta, I believe we are entering a phase where systematic asset allocation will separate the true professionals from the speculators. I look forward to engaging with you all on portfolio theory, emerging market risk, and the future of global macro.
