From Non-Target to MBB Internship/Full-Time Offer

Question

As the title says, I was able to land an Internship at MBB from a non-target school, and in fact, some of the people I talked to at the company were surprised by where I went. I am here to just share that it does not always matter where you are and more so what things stand out on your application. Ask any questions you may have and I will answer.

I did not network extensively until I had interviews. I applied cold turkey on the very first day that applications came out. I only applied for two of the MBB firms and got interviews at both. Once I got the interviews a few people reached out and then I began to meet with consultants at those companies weekly to prep. I applied in early July and got the notice of my first round of interviews by the end of July and those interviews took place in mid-August.

Personally, I think what differentiated my application was my research experiences. I have done extensive research in many areas that used scientific computing. Additionally, from that research, I have several publications and won some scholarships. I think that this made me stand out because typically this kind of profile fits someone graduating grad school and not undergrad, thus it perhaps made me look more accomplished. Everything else, like high GPA, clubs, and being in STEM felt fairly standard.
