FT Interview Odds

Hello, rising senior at a target school recruiting FT for MBB

GPA + experience + leadership are solid so far, but some personal circumstances led me to switching my junior summer to be a summer research internship as I needed to stay close to home (hometown is in a rural small town). Decided to be productive and spend this summer grinding out full-time recruiting, but was wondering if the resume screen may not work in my favor.

I'm wondering if a recruiter may see my junior summer role as a gap on my resume. Is it worth explaining in a CV/networking to gain a referral?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation is not uncommon, and there are ways to address it effectively:

  1. Addressing the Junior Summer Role: While a summer research internship may not align directly with MBB's typical expectations, it’s crucial to craft a compelling narrative. Highlight transferable skills gained during the internship, such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, or teamwork. Frame the experience as a unique perspective you bring to consulting.

  2. Explaining Personal Circumstances: If you feel the need to explain your choice, keep it concise and professional. Mentioning personal circumstances briefly in networking conversations or cover letters can help recruiters understand your decision without dwelling on it. For example, you could say, "Due to personal circumstances, I pursued a research internship close to home, which allowed me to develop [specific skills]."

  3. Networking for Referrals: Networking is critical, especially when your resume might raise questions. Reach out to alumni or professionals at MBB firms, explain your situation, and emphasize your strong GPA, leadership, and other experiences. A referral can help mitigate any concerns about your junior summer.

  4. Proactive Full-Time Recruiting: Use this summer to prepare thoroughly for full-time recruiting. Focus on casing practice, behavioral interview prep, and refining your resume. Demonstrating that you’ve been productive and intentional about your career goals will work in your favor.

  5. Resume Framing: Ensure your resume emphasizes achievements and skills from all experiences, not just your junior summer. Highlight leadership roles, academic accomplishments, and any other internships or projects that showcase your qualifications for consulting.

By taking these steps, you can effectively address any potential concerns and position yourself as a strong candidate for MBB full-time roles.
